[Exclusive Interview] Park Ji Hyun Transforms Into An R-Rated Writer for “Forbidden Fairytale”

As the release of Forbidden Fairytale in Indonesia approaches, KoreanUpdates got to sit down with leading lady Park Ji Hyun and get candid about the adult romantic comedy movie. Forbidden Fairytale tells the story of Yun Dan Bi (Park Ji Hyun), who works as a member of the youth protection team, monitoring countless adult content during the day and writing her fairy tale at night. That is until she is trapped in a situation that forces her to write adult fiction, which becomes an overnight sensation. The movie also stars Super Junior member Choi Siwon as Dan Bi’s senior at work and Sung Dong Il as an adult web novel publishing company’s CEO.

Q1. Did you do any special preparation to play a writer role?
Apakah ada persiapan khusus untuk memainkan peran sebagai penulis?
▶ (ENG) First of all, I think my long-time hobby was a help. I can type really quickly, so I guess it helped me (laughs). And because I play the role of writer of a special genre, I tried to find novels of the same genre.
▶ (ID) Pertama-tama, aku rasa hobiku sedari lama membantuku. Aku bisa mengetik dengan sangat cepat jadi itu sepertinya sedikit membantuku (dalam persiapan). Dan karena aku memainkan peran penulis dari genre yang spesial, aku juga banyak mencari novel-novel dengan genre yang sama.

Q2. What was your reaction when you learned the task that your characters need to do as staff of the Youth Protection Team?
Apa reaksimu ketika tahu pekerjaan yang dilakukan oleh karaktermu sebagai staf Tim Perlindungan Anak?
▶ (ENG) I also got to know about the existence of people who work with that kind of task through this movie. I remember how excited I was as I got to know about it the first time. However, it was a fun project as I got to consider the difficulties of their task, and at the same time tried imagining it endlessly.
▶ (ID) Aku juga baru tahu kalau ada orang yang pekerjaannya seperti ini dari film ini. Aku ingat bagaimana semangatnya aku di awal-awal aku tahu tentang ini. Meskipun begitu, bekerja untuk film ini menyenangkan karena aku jadi bisa memikirkan bagaimana sulitnya pekerjaan ini dan dalam waktu bersamaan mencoba untuk berimajinasi tanpa batas.

Q3. What is the reason you chose this movie?
Apa yang membuatmu memilih film ini?
▶ (ENG) The desire to try the comedy genre that I haven’t tried before was the biggest reason I chose this movie. As I strongly value humor, I truly enjoy laughing and making people laugh. Even though my character Danbi is serious about searching for her dream in between her ideals and reality, this project holds great significance for me as this is the first comedy project in my filmography.
▶ (ID) Keinginan terpendam untuk mencoba genre komedi yang belum pernah aku lakukan di proyek sebelumnya adalah alasan terbesar kenapa aku memilih film ini. Aku merasa tertawa itu sangat penting jadi aku sangat senang tertawa dan membuat orang lain tertawa. Meskipun karakterku Danbi orangnya serius dalam mengejar mimpinya di antara apa yang dia percaya dan apa yang sebenarnya terjadi, aku merasa film ini jadi sangat bermakna karena ini adalah proyek komedi pertama yang ada di filmografiku.

Q4. Congratulations on winning an award for your drama in 2024! What is your goal as a movie actor now? What is the difference between acting in a drama & movie?
Selamat atas penghargaan untuk dramamu di tahun 2024! Apa tujuanmu sebagai aktor film sekarang? Apa perbedaan yang kamu rasakan dari drama dan film?
▶ (ENG) Thank you^^ Initially, I assumed the differences (between drama and movie) came from the different settings and systems, but as I gained experience, I realized that’s not necessarily the case. Of course, physical and mental demands vary depending on the genre or character. As an actor, I strive to stay focused on set and can continue acting for a long time.
▶ (ID) Terima kasih^^ Awalnya aku berasumsi akan ada perbedaan (antara drama dan film) karena tempat pembuatan dan sistemnya berbeda, tapi sejalan dengan bertambahnya pengalamanku, aku merasa tidak ada perbedaan yang berarti. Tentu saja ada perbedaan dalam aspek fisik dan mental tergantung dengan karakter dan genre. Sebagai aktor, aku berusaha untuk selalu fokus saat berada di lokasi syuting. Aku harap aku bisa mempertahankan usahaku dan dapat terus berakting untuk waktu yang lama.

Q5. If you were playing another character in the movie, who do you want to play?
Kalau kamu bisa memainkan karakter lain dalam film ini, karakter apa yang akan kamu pilih?
▶ (ENG) Hmm, maybe the female version of CEO Hwang? (laughs) I think it would be fun to reinterpret the character in my own way and portray it humorously like senior Sung Dong Il.
▶ (ID) Hmm, mungkin Pak Hwang? Versi perempuannya? Sepertinya bakal seru untuk mainin karakternya sesuai dengan gayaku sendiri, seperti senior Sung Dong Il yang buat karakternya lucu.

Q6. Your character is someone who does something following your parent’s path, does actor Park Ji Hyun resonate with Yun Dan Bi?
Karaktermu adalah seseorang yang mengikuti jejak karir orangtuanya. Apakah aktris Park Ji Hyun mengerti karakter Yun Dan Bi?
▶ (ENG) I could relate to Danbi from her point of view. From her perspective, her background and decisions make sense. I could understand it personally, too. However, as I personally don’t have a similar narrative, I tried to connect with the character by drawing on a variety of emotions.
▶ (ID) Aku bisa mengerti Danbi sebagai karakternya. Kalau kita melihat dari perspektif Danbi, kita bisa mengerti pilihan yang dia buat. Secara pribadipun aku mengerti Danbi, tapi karena aku tidak punya latar belakang yang mirip jadi untuk benar-benar mengerti dia aku mencoba merasakan berbagai hal.

Q7. Can you give 3 biggest reasons people cannot miss this movie?
Bisakah kamu memberikan 3 alasan terbesar kenapa orang-orang harus menonton film ini?
▶ (ENG) First, I think it would be great to start the new year of 2025 with lots of laughter by watching our comedy film, Forbidden Fairytale! Second, beyond the humor, the film gives you a chance to reflect on dreams that must have concerned you once in a while, the things you want to do & the things you must do, and the things you can do & things that you’re good at. Lastly, if you watch the movie, you will understand why I am recommending it! It’s not because I can’t think of more reasons (laugh).
▶ (ID) Pertama, aku mau merekomendasikan film komedi Forbidden Fairytale karena menurutku mengawali tahun baru 2025 dengan penuh tawa adalah hal yang baik! Dan tidak hanya sekedar memberikan tawa, aku berharap menonton film ini juga memberikanmu waktu untuk berpikir tentang mimpi yang sesekali mungkin membuatmu bingung, tentang hal-hal yang ingin kamu lakukan & hal-hal yang harus kamu lakukan, dan pekerjaan yang kamu bisa lakukan & pekerjaan yang kamu lakukan dengan baik.
